General Information

What makes a safari in Botswana unique compared to other destinations?

Botswana offers unparalleled access to pristine wilderness areas, including the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Chobe National Park, home to Africa’s largest elephant population.

The country’s low-impact, high-quality tourism model ensures an exclusive and authentic experience in almost untouched landscapes. This approach minimizes crowds, allowing you to enjoy wildlife sightings often with just your group and no other vehicles – creating the perfect environment for capturing stunning images.

What type of safaris does Wild Focus Safaris specialize in?

Wild Focus Safaris specializes in mobile tented photographic safaris, designed for wildlife and nature photography enthusiasts. Our safaris combine expertly guided wildlife encounters with the flexibility and intimacy of a mobile camp.

What is a mobile tented safari, and how does it differ from other safaris?

A mobile tented safari is a unique, immersive experience where guests move between different wilderness locations, staying in temporary tented camps set up and dismantled as the safari progresses. Unlike lodge-based or permanent luxury camp safaris, mobile tented safaris offer flexibility to follow wildlife movements, access remote areas, and provide a closer connection to nature. Our mobile camps are designed to leave minimal environmental impact, making them more eco-friendly than permanent structures. This safari type emphasizes adventure, intimacy with the wilderness, and personalized experiences, contrasting with the fixed locations and amenities of traditional lodge safaris.

Where are the safaris conducted?

Our safari in Botswana is conducted across some of the country’s most iconic and diverse wilderness areas, including the lush wetlands of Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Concession, renowned for their abundant wildlife and scenic beauty. From there, we venture to Savuti and Chobe National Park, famous for their predator activity and massive elephant herds. The journey also explores the dramatic salt flats of the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans, as well as the arid landscapes of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR), offering a unique contrast and the chance to experience Botswana’s incredible variety of ecosystems.

Who can join your safaris? Are they suitable for solo travelers, couples, or groups?

Our safari is open to everyone, including solo travelers, couples, and groups, making it a versatile and inclusive experience. Solo travelers will appreciate the chance to explore in a safe, social setting, while couples can enjoy a romantic escape immersed in nature. Groups, whether families or friends, can benefit from private or shared options tailored to their needs. With flexible itineraries and personalized attention, our safari ensures a memorable adventure for all, regardless of travel style or group size.

Do you offer customized or private safaris?

Yes, we offer customized and private photographic safaris tailored to your needs. These safaris provide flexibility in planning itineraries, choosing prime wildlife locations, and maximizing photographic opportunities. With personalized guidance from experienced safari guides, we ensure an exclusive and immersive experience for photographers of all levels.

I would like to organize a safari for my family, but none of us are photographers. Do you also organize safaris for non-photographers?

Absolutely! While we specialize in photographic safaris, our tours are equally suitable for nature enthusiasts who simply want to enjoy Botswana’s incredible wildlife and landscapes. We can tailor an itinerary to match your family’s interests, ensuring a memorable experience for everyone, whether that includes wildlife spotting, scenic excursions, or learning about Botswana’s ecosystems and culture.

Are your photo safaris suitable for beginners in photography?

Yes, our safaris are designed for photographers of all skill levels, from beginners to professionals. Our guides provide tips and insights to enhance your photography skills.

How do I get to Botswana?

Your safari may begin in either Maun or Kasane, both of which are easily accessible and located near the Okavango Delta. Daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town (South Africa) connect to both towns, making travel convenient.

For help with your travel arrangements, feel free to reach out to us or consult your travel agent for advice on getting to Botswana for your safari.

Do I need a visa to enter Botswana?

A visa may be required for entry into Botswana, depending on your nationality. We recommend checking with the Botswana embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date visa requirements. Additionally, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. For citizens of some countries, a visa may be issued upon arrival, while others may need to apply in advance.

Wildlife

What wildlife can I expect to see on a Wild Focus Safari?

On a Wild Focus Safari, you can encounter a diverse range of wildlife, including iconic predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs, along with elephants, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, and a variety of antelope species. Bird enthusiasts can also look forward to spotting numerous bird species. While wildlife sightings depend on the season and location, our carefully designed itineraries ensure you have the best chances to witness and photograph these incredible animals in their natural habitats.

What is the best time of year for wildlife photography in Botswana?

The best time for wildlife photography in Botswana depends on your preferences and photographic goals, as each season offers unique opportunities.
Dry Season (May to October):
The dry season is ideal for spotting wildlife as animals gather around waterholes and rivers due to limited water sources. Vegetation is sparse, making it easier to observe and photograph animals. Temperatures: Days are warm (20–30°C / 68–86°F), but mornings and evenings can be quite cold, especially in June and July (as low as 5°C / 41°F), so layering is essential.

Green Season (November to April):
The green season transforms Botswana into a lush paradise with vibrant landscapes and dramatic skies, offering stunning backdrops for photography. This time is perfect for capturing migratory birds, newborn animals, and dramatic interactions among wildlife. Afternoon storms add dynamic lighting for creative shots. Temperatures: Days are warmer (25–35°C / 77–95°F), and nights remain mild. Rainfall is usually in short bursts, mainly in the afternoons or evenings.
Both seasons present incredible photographic opportunities, and our itineraries are planned to make the most of the conditions during your chosen travel period.

With all the wildlife around - is it safe in the vehicle and in camp?

Safety is a top priority on our safaris. Our vehicles are specially designed for wildlife viewing and are driven by experienced guides who are well-versed in animal behavior and safety protocols.

In camp, you are in the care of a professional team, and all camps are set up with safety in mind. Although camps are unfenced to allow you to experience the wilderness more authentically, our staff ensures your safety by providing clear guidelines and monitoring the area. You will always be escorted by a guide when moving around after dark. By following the guidance provided, you can relax and enjoy your safari experience with peace of mind.

Photography-Related Information

Are the safari vehicles equipped for photography?

Yes, our safari vehicles are specifically designed with photographers in mind. They are open-sided and have a fold-down windshield to ensure unobstructed views and greater flexibility for capturing the perfect shot. Each guest is guaranteed a window seat, providing ample space and ideal positioning for photography. We also provide bean bags for camera stabilization, ensuring steady shots even during wildlife action. The vehicles include additional features such as charging points to keep your equipment powered throughout the day.

Do you provide photography equipment for rent?

No, we do not offer photography equipment for rent. Guests are required to bring their own gear. However, we do provide support equipment such as bean bags for camera stabilization.

Tip: If you don’t want to invest in new lenses or equipment, you can rent camera gear for the duration of your safari from rental companies in your home country. Many countries have camera equipment rental services that allow you to borrow high-quality gear for your trip.

What type of equipment should I bring for the safari?

We recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, ideally paired with telephoto lenses (100–400mm or longer) for wildlife photography. A wide-angle lens is also useful for capturing landscapes.

When you book your safari with us, you will receive a photo manual with additional tips and recommendations on the best gear to bring for your specific safari.

Are tripods or monopods allowed on the safari vehicles?

We provide bean bags to ensure stability for your camera, making them ideal for most photography needs. While tripods might be necessary for long exposure shots, monopods are generally not required, but if you prefer to bring one for extra stability, you are welcome to do so. Our vehicle setup is optimized to enhance your photographic experience while maintaining comfort and flexibility for all guests.

Are there opportunities for night photography?

Yes, certain itineraries, such as the Kalahari Explorer, offer exceptional opportunities for night photography, including astrophotography. These areas are free from light pollution, providing clear, unobstructed views of the night sky and the Milky Way.

Our experienced photo hosts are well-versed in the technical aspects of night photography and will guide you to the best locations for capturing breathtaking nightscapes. To make the most of these opportunities, we recommend bringing a sturdy tripod, a wide aperture lens, and a remote shutter release for optimal results.

Is Wi-Fi available at the camps?

In areas where there is mobile phone coverage, we may be able to provide limited internet access for basic needs, such as checking emails or sharing updates. Please note that connectivity can be inconsistent, so we recommend using the safari as an opportunity to disconnect and fully embrace the natural surroundings.

Is laundry service available?

Complimentary laundry service (excluding underwear) is available on full days in camp, depending on weather and water availability. If you prefer to wash your own clothes, washing detergent can be provided upon request.

Health & Safety

Are mobile tented safaris suitable for travelers of all ages?

Yes, our mobile tented safaris are designed with safety and comfort as top priorities, making them suitable for most age groups. However, due to the nature of the safari, which involves travel between different locations and occasional physical activities, such as boarding safari vehicles, a basic level of fitness and mobility is recommended.

For our scheduled departures, we have a minimum age requirement of 12 years. If you wish to travel with younger children, we recommend booking a private safari, which can be tailored to your family’s needs.

If anyone in your party has specific mobility concerns, please notify us in advance, and we will do our best to accommodate those needs.

With all the wildlife around - is it safe in the vehicle and in camp?

Safety is a top priority on our safaris. Our vehicles are specially designed for wildlife viewing and are driven by experienced guides who are well-versed in animal behavior and safety protocols.

Safari Preparation & Packing Tips

What should I pack for my safari?

When you book your safari, we provide a detailed packing list tailored to both your specific safari experience and the time of year you’ll be traveling.

Are there any luggage restrictions I need to be aware of?

For safaris that include local flight transfers (such as our scheduled “Delta Explorer Safari“), there is a luggage restriction of 20kg per person. This must be packed in soft-sided luggage, as the small charter planes used for these transfers have strict weight regulations. If your luggage exceeds the limit, you may be asked to leave items behind or travel without certain belongings. To avoid any issues, please ensure your luggage complies with the weight limit.

If you need to bring additional luggage, you can purchase an extra seat for your excess baggage. Please inform us at the time of booking if this is required.

Yes, upon booking, you will receive a comprehensive photo manual packed with practical tips and guidance to help you capture the best images during your safari.
